The Citizenship Act, originally passed in 1947 and revised in 1977, is generally considered overdue for further amendment. Accordingly, the Ministry prepared legislation to this effect for several Ministers.
More recently, the then-Minister of Citizenship and Immigration asked the Standing Committee to advise the government regarding a new Citizenship Act and its unanimous report was tabled in the House on October 6, 2005 and the House concurred. The current Minister, however, has declined to act, asserting before the Standing Committee that there is "no consensus" on the issue.
