Standing Committee on Public Accounts
Andrew Telegdi has served as Vice-Chair of the Standing Committee on Public Accounts. This Committee reviews the reports of the Auditor General and can initiate an examination of any matter contained in these reports. Andrew, for example, convinced the Committee to examine the expensive system the government used for household moves of civil servants and soldiers. The matter became the subject of an investigation by the Auditor General. (April and October, 1997, Chapter 21).
The Committee has also looked at the financial statements of the federal government and crown corporations, as well as some of the major program expenditures of governemnt departments and agencies.
Andrew's goal, as Vice-Chair of the Committee, was to find and eliminate cases of government waste.
Justice Committee
Andrew Telegdi has also served two terms on the Justice Committee. This Committee reviews Bills involving the Canadian justice system and conducts studies of related subjects referred to it by the House.
On April 24, 1997 he was accorded the privilege of tabling the Committee's thirteenth report, Renewing Youth Justice.
Andrew served as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Canadian Citizenship and Immigration, the Honourable Elinor Caplan, P.C, M.P.
The function of a Parliamentary Secretary is to assist a Minister in administrative duties so that Ministers have more time to work on policy matters. While serving in that capacity, Andrew, therefore, assisted the Minister with routine matters in the House of Commons, committee work and extra-parliamentary responsibilities. He resigned on May 16, 2000 because his duty as P.S. would have required him to defend legislation that he opposed.
In the current Parliament, the 38th, he has been elected Chair of the Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration.
