Passport
Canadians travelling outside of Canada (to nations other than the USA) require a valid passport issued by the Government of Canada. This document displays a current photograph and will normally be the only document recognized by foreign governments as proof of your Canadian citizenship.
See the Passport web site at Foreign Affairs:
It is essential to obtain a passport well in advance of your departure from Canada. A passport application may be obtained from most travel agents. An application must be completed for each applicant over sixteen years of age. Children under sixteen may be included on the passport of a parent or legal guardian, (upon completion of a special form).
The following must accompany a properly notarized application (see section nine on the form):
- original Canadian birth certificate (issued by federal or provincial gov't) or original citizenship and immigration documents;
- two notarized, passport size photographs;
- a certified cheque or money order for $60.00 per passport, payable to the Receiver General for Canada;
- expired passport (if applicable).
For the fastest service take the completed application in person to the passport office:
101 Frederick St.,
8:45 a.m.-4:30 p.m.

Benefits
Child Tax Benefit
To be eligible for the Child Tax Benefit (CTB), you must be the parent primarily responsible for the care and upbringing of the child. In addition, the child must reside full time with you and you must be a permanent resident of Canada for Income Tax purposes. Both cohabitating spouses (if applicable) must file an Income Tax Return before benefit can be calculated. The benefit varies according to family income and the number and ages of the children. To direct benefits to the families that need them the most, Revenue Canada gradually phases out payments to families with higher incomes.
Please remember that you must apply for the benefit when you have a new child or when you become a primary caregiver of a child. Likewise, if your situation changes and a child for whom you were previously responsible no longer resides with you, then you must inform Revenue Canada to prevent future collection action. CTB is issued on the 20th day of each month.
GST Credits
To receive the GST credit, complete an Income Tax return and fill out "step 2, GST Credit application" on page one of the return. Be sure to enter your spouse's net income and the number of children for whom you are claiming the credit. Be certain to indicate your marital status in the identification area of the return. The credit cheques are issued in July, October, January and April.Reasons why a GST credit cheque may not have been issued:
Not informing Revenue Canada of a change of address;
Not filing an Income Tax Return or not completing appropriate section;
Income is too high;
Both spouses applied for the benefit (only one may receive the credit);
Credit withheld to offset money owed to Revenue Canada;
Credit withheld for Family Support.
