December 21, 2000: Waterloo City Council finalized the plan to build the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics on the site of the Memorial Arena on Silver Lake. The commemoration of Canada's war casualties will be moved to the Rec Complex.

Founded through the initiative of Mike Lazaridis, co-CEO of Research In Motion (standing right of Mayor McKinnon), the Institute has an endowment of $120 million contributed by Mr. Lazaridis, Jim Balsillie and Doug Fregin.

It was a genuine honour to help open the new Career Centre at Waterloo Collegiate Institute. The new centre was funded by HRDC in partnership with the school board.
